A community garden: a volunteer-led effort in Aurora
Volunteers in Aurora are raising $1,800 for a community garden at the old Jacaranda bus depot.
🇺🇸 Aurora, Illinois, United States767 views
For five years the neighborhood has asked for a community garden. This year a group of 13 volunteers, including a retired civil engineer, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the old Jacaranda bus depot, but no funding.
We have received donated volunteer hours worth about $1,150, and the remaining cost is $1,800.
It will serve about 560 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in April and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $1,800 goes:
• Tools hire and delivery: $330
• Permits and inspections: $380
• Materials: $1,090
