A community fridge: a volunteer-led effort in Kolkata
Volunteers in Kolkata are raising $300 for a community fridge at Acacia Primary School.
🇮🇳 Kolkata, West Bengal, India1,101 views
For twelve years the neighborhood has asked for a community fridge. This year a group of 30 volunteers, including the neighborhood football club, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for Acacia Primary School, but no funding.
We have received donated volunteer hours worth about $190, and the remaining cost is $300.
It will serve about 193 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in October and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $300 goes:
• Materials: $200
• Permits and inspections: $15
• Safety equipment and signage: $55
• Tools hire and delivery: $30
Thank you so much.
Updates from Sathi
Update from Kolkata: I met with the suppliers and confirmed the amounts. We're at 45% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.
Good news. Because of your gifts ($95 in total) I made the first payment toward tools hire and delivery. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

Thanks for sharing this, Sathi. This could happen to any of us. My husband and I read this together. God bless
Stay strong. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. I'm in teaching myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you. Greetings from Kyiv
Best of luck, Sathi. It takes guts to ask. Well done. We're a small family in Jerusalem but we're thinking of you
Hope this works out for you. Thinking of Kolkata.
