A community fridge: a volunteer-led effort in Colombo
A community-led a community fridge at Unity Primary School that will serve 103 neighbors.
🇱🇰 Colombo, Western, Sri LankaPosted Oct 1, 2026395 views
For twelve years the neighborhood has asked for a community fridge. This year a group of 26 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for Unity Primary School, but no funding.
We have received donated timber, and the remaining cost is $650.
It will serve about 103 people, including young people who have nowhere safe to play. We'll hold a build day in December and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $650 goes:
• Materials: $450
• Permits and inspections: $65
• Safety equipment and signage: $70
• Tools hire and delivery: $65

thanks for sharing this. Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. Our whole street has been following this since the weekend. Thinking of Colombo.
