Weekly meals for families facing hunger in Awka
Abubakar runs a volunteer pantry feeding 169 families; this fund restocks shelves for the school holidays.
🇳🇬 Awka, Anambra, Nigeria1,619 views
Since 2022, our volunteer team has run the Sunday Shelf every Tuesday from the back of a school canteen. We started with 12 families, and now we feed 169 each week.
Donations have dropped by about 43% this school holidays, while the line has grown every single week.
We rely on volunteers - 11 of us - and keep no salaries or overhead. I buy staples at wholesale prices at the Awka market and keep every receipt.
Each $5 feeds a family of four for a week.
I'll post the weekly shopping receipts and a photo of the shelves each Sunday.
Where the $360 goes:
• Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale): $220
• Fresh vegetables and fruit: $90
• Baby formula and diapers: $45
• Refrigeration and electricity: $5
Even a small gift gets used right away and I'll thank you myself.

Good luck, Abubakar. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money. Take care.
Take care, Abubakar. Looking forward to the next update. Take care.
Good luck. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. My mother had a similar thing happen so this one hit home. Blessings.
Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Abubakar!
Rice, beans, flour and oil (wholesale) is $220 of it. Everything else is listed in the story and nothing outside that list comes out of this page. Ask me anything else.
Wishing you peace. Your post was clear and honest. Love from Rome.
Sending love, Abubakar. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Blessings.
good luck, Abubakar. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it.
good luck, Abubakar. It takes guts to ask. Well done. My neighbor in Oakland donated after I showed her your page. All the best.
So sorry you're going through this. Shared it with a few friends. Please keep us posted
take care, Abubakar. This could happen to any of us. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too
