The Union canal cleanup and restoration: help our volunteer crew
Help us clean and replant the Union canal before the June planting window closes.
🇿🇦 Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa631 views
The Union canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This February, 96 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 73 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the municipal water board, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $600 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $330
• Tools and protective gear: $65
• Waste removal and skip hire: $150
• Signage and educational materials: $55
Please ask me anything in the questions section. I'll answer honestly and quickly.

You're not alone, Fiona. Great idea, hope you get there. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Blessings
Sending love. I hope things turn around soon. Greetings from Paris.
Hope you get there. Greetings from Nîmes.
Sending strength. More neighborhoods should do this. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. All the best.
