Teresita was diagnosed with a thyroid nodule that needs removal in May. The surgeon at Saint Matthew Hospital recommended laparoscopic cyst removal, and She is scheduled for July. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $10,250, and after what my insurance will pay we're still $5,100 short. my wife has been in and out of Saint Matthew Hospital since May. The doctors say a thyroid nodule that needs removal will get worse without laparoscopic cyst removal. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $10,250 is more than we can find. While we wait, Teresita struggles with daily life and can't lift anything heavy. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 12 weeks. During that time Teresita won't be able to lift anything heavy, so the costs keep growing. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $5,100 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $1,850 • Hospital stay (4 nights): $1,750 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $280 • Post-operative medication: $410 • Physiotherapy sessions: $560 • Travel and lodging for the family: $250 Thanks for being kind about this. - Jose

Thank you. If you're in Hamilton I'll say if something practical comes up. For now sharing this is great. Ask me anything else.

  • Thinking of you, Jose. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did.

    • Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Teresita!

      • Jose J. PinedaOwnerAnswer

Sure. The biggest one is surgeon and anesthesia fees, $1,850. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Let me know if you want more detail.

    • Hang in there, Jose. Your post was clear and honest. I went through something like this 14 years ago and strangers helped me out.

      • Look after yourselves too, caregivers need rest. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Thinking of Hamilton
