Restoring the Union canal: a volunteer-led project in Brisbane
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Union canal needs $1,800 for saplings and equipment.
🇦🇺 Australia490 views
The Union canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This January, 34 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 125 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the district council, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $1,800 goes:
• Signage and educational materials: $135
• Native saplings and stakes: $1,400
• Waste removal and skip hire: $265
Thanks for reading all this.

Sending strength. I hope things turn around soon. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day. Greetings from Mumbai.
Hope things get better soon, Keith. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. We're a small family in Breda but we're thinking of you. God bless.
Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. My mother had a similar thing happen so this one hit home.
