Restoring the Freedom wetland: a volunteer-led project in Niterói
Help us clean and replant the Freedom wetland before the June planting window closes.
🇧🇷 Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil2,010 views
The Freedom wetland has been used as an informal dump for years. This February, 106 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 114 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the municipal water board, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $700 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $195
• Tools and protective gear: $240
• Waste removal and skip hire: $250
• Signage and educational materials: $15
Please ask me anything in the questions section. I'll answer honestly and quickly.
Updates from Wagner
Good news. Because of your gifts ($407 in total) I made the first payment toward tools and protective gear. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

Wishing you peace, Wagner. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Greetings from São Paulo
