Restoring the Freedom canal: a volunteer-led project in Bergamo
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Freedom canal needs $1,350 for saplings and equipment.
🇮🇹 Italy643 views
The Freedom canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This May, 94 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 130 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the district council, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $1,350 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $420
• Tools and protective gear: $470
• Waste removal and skip hire: $280
• Signage and educational materials: $180
I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen.

How is Bianca doing now?
Sending strength. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. I have a 13 year old who wants to send good wishes too. Blessings.
Great idea, hope you get there. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money.
Stay strong. Hope this works out for you. My brother had a similar thing happen so this one hit home.
is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Bianca
Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. native saplings and stakes comes first ($420) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Good question.
I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. I hope August is when things finally get easier
sending strength, Bianca. Gave what I could, wish it was more. I hope August is when things finally get easier. Thinking of Bergamo.
Praying for you. Looking forward to the next update. Our whole street has been following this since the weekend.
Hope you get there. Love from Quezon City.
