Plant 3,800 native trees around the Freedom wetland in Hamilton
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Freedom wetland needs $2,400 for saplings and equipment.
🇳🇿 New Zealand3,224 views
The Freedom wetland has been used as an informal dump for years. This June, 70 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 129 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $2,400 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $1,400
• Tools and protective gear: $500
• Waste removal and skip hire: $500

Keep going. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day. All the best
Hang in there, Losa. More neighborhoods should do this. It's not much but it's yours. Blessings
Sending good thoughts, Losa. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Love from Cape Coast.
Great idea, hope you get there. Our whole street has been following this since the weekend. Thinking of Hamilton.
