In January I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. My oncology team at the Kingston Oncology Institute has planned 6 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in April. I was told to expect about 10 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 47, I worked as a bus conductor until January, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the Kingston Oncology Institute 4 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $2,150 goes: • Scans and lab work: $560 • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $1,500 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $90 Even a small gift gets used right away and I'll thank you myself.
