In August I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. My surgeon at San Diego General Hospital recommended a craniotomy, and I have been placed on the schedule for November. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $3,750, and after what our health plan will pay, I'm still $3,000 short. Doctors at San Diego General Hospital told me a benign brain tumor will get worse without a craniotomy. I work as a retail assistant, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $3,750 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a retail assistant have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. The recovery period is expected to take about 4 weeks. I'll not be able to stand for more than ten minutes during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $3,000 goes: • Post-operative medication: $440 • Travel and lodging for the family: $210 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,350 I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen. - Sophie

Updates from Sophie

  1. Good news. Because of your gifts ($445 in total) the plan for surgeon and anesthesia fees is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  2. We're at 12% thanks to 7 of you. I met with the hospital and confirmed the amounts. More news soon.

  3. Good news. Because of your gifts ($135 in total) the plan for post-operative medication is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  • Keep going, Sophie. I hope things turn around soon. Sent it to 34 people at work. All the best

    • thinking of you. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Wish I lived closer to Birmingham so I could bring a meal. Thinking of San Diego.

      • Stay strong, Sophie. This could happen to any of us. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it.
