Madhu was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor in July. The surgeon at Mumbai Orthopedic Institute recommended a partial thyroidectomy, and She is scheduled for September. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $1,150, and after what our health plan will pay we're still $700 short. my sister has been in and out of Mumbai Orthopedic Institute since July. The doctors say a benign brain tumor will get worse without a partial thyroidectomy. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $1,150 is more than we can find. While we wait, Madhu struggles with daily life and can't climb stairs. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. The recovery period is expected to take about 6 weeks. During that time Madhu won't be able to climb stairs, so the costs keep growing.
