Gallbladder removal for Dorota: covering what insurance won't

After a deviated septum causing chronic infections, Dorota was cleared for gallbladder removal, but the bill is more than we can manage.

In July I was diagnosed with a deviated septum causing chronic infections. My surgeon at Leeds Community Hospital recommended gallbladder removal, and I have been placed on the schedule for October. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $5,250, and after what the public health scheme will pay, I'm still $3,150 short. Doctors at Leeds Community Hospital told me a deviated septum causing chronic infections will get worse without gallbladder removal. I work as a seamstress, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $5,250 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a seamstress have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 10 weeks. I'll not be able to walk without help during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $3,150 goes: • Physiotherapy sessions: $510 • Hospital stay (4 nights): $2,400 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $240 Thank you for reading my story. - Dorota

Updates from Dorota

  1. Update from Leeds: the plan for pre-operative tests and imaging is now scheduled. We're at 44% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.

  2. Wanted to say thank you properly. 10% funded and the plan for hospital stay is now scheduled.

  3. Good news. Because of your gifts ($29 in total) the plan for physiotherapy sessions is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.
