Clean air and water for Birmingham: restoring the Sycamore hillside

A neighborhood-led restoration of the Sycamore hillside needs $2,300 for saplings and equipment.

Birmingham
The Sycamore hillside has been used as an informal dump for years. This September, 115 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 81 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good. We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist. The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade. All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials. Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage. Where the $2,300 goes: • Native saplings and stakes: $1,250 • Tools and protective gear: $400 • Waste removal and skip hire: $480 • Signage and educational materials: $170 Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure.

Updates from Parker

  1. Small update. $1,391 so far, I made the first payment toward waste removal and skip hire.

  2. We're at 27% thanks to 25 of you. I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts. More news soon.

  3. Thank you all. We're at 12% now ($282). I'm honestly stunned. I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts.
