Cataract surgery for Daniele: covering what insurance won't
Daniele needs cataract surgery at Milan Community Hospital and the family is $6,000 short of the hospital's estimate.

In May I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in the right knee. My surgeon at Milan Community Hospital recommended cataract surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for August. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $7,500, and after what the public health scheme will pay, I'm still $6,000 short.
Doctors at Milan Community Hospital told me osteoarthritis in the right knee will get worse without cataract surgery. I work as a market vendor, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $7,500 is far beyond what I've.
Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a market vendor have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk.
Rehabilitation is expected to take about 4 weeks. I'll not be able to work a full shift during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one.
I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section.
Where the $6,000 goes:
• Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,500
• Hospital stay (4 nights): $2,250
• Pre-operative tests and imaging: $350
• Post-operative medication: $250
• Physiotherapy sessions: $520
• Travel and lodging for the family: $130
Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure.

- 2025-08-19
- bill type
- Hospital invoice

take care, Daniele. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Don't be hard on yourself for asking.
