A solar-powered water pump: a volunteer-led effort in Addis Ababa
A community-led a solar-powered water pump at the Acacia health centre yard that will serve 568 neighbors.
🇪🇹 Addis Ababa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia1,136 views
For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a solar-powered water pump. This year a group of 24 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Acacia health centre yard, but no funding.
We have received donated timber, and the remaining cost is $400.
It will serve about 568 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in December and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $400 goes:
• Materials: $250
• Permits and inspections: $35
• Safety equipment and signage: $40
• Tools hire and delivery: $75
Please ask me anything in the questions section. I'll answer honestly and quickly.

Good luck. I hope things turn around soon. I went through something like this 4 years ago and strangers helped me out. Love from Coyoacán.
you're not alone, Yohannes. This could happen to any of us. My husband and I read this together
Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. Thinking of Addis Ababa.
Keep going, Yohannes. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Please keep us posted. Take care
Is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Yohannes.
Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. materials comes first ($250) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Thanks, that means a lot.
great idea, hope you get there. After 16 years in public service I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Take care.
Best of luck, Yohannes. I hope things turn around soon. Take care.
you're not alone. Looking forward to the next update. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money. All the best
Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Thinking of Addis Ababa
