A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in New Orleans
A community-led a free library and reading room at the Unity vacant lot that will serve 137 neighbors.
🇺🇸 New Orleans, Louisiana, United States1,600 views
For three years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 25 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Unity vacant lot, but no funding.
We have received donated timber, and the remaining cost is $1,200.
It will serve about 137 people, including local farmers and market traders. We'll hold a build day in April and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $1,200 goes:
• Permits and inspections: $110
• Tools hire and delivery: $640
• Safety equipment and signage: $450
Every share and every dollar helps.

You're not alone, Maria. Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day. All the best
