A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Melbourne
A community-led a free library and reading room at the Freedom health centre yard that will serve 467 neighbors.

For ten years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 10 volunteers, including two retired carpenters, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Freedom health centre yard, but no funding.
We have received donated a pump, and the remaining cost is $4,200.
It will serve about 467 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in October and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $4,200 goes:
• Materials: $3,200
• Permits and inspections: $340
• Safety equipment and signage: $220
• Tools hire and delivery: $440
With deep gratitude,
Jing

Sending strength. Gave what I could, wish it was more. Love from Jakarta.
Rooting for you, Jing. This could happen to any of us. Please keep us posted. Greetings from Mecca
thinking of you and your family. More neighborhoods should do this. Put this on a community board in Medellín this morning. All the best.
So sorry you're going through this, Jing. Gave what I could, wish it was more. Wish I lived closer to Kolkata so I could bring a meal!
is there anything that isn't money that would help Jing?
Thank you. If you're in Melbourne I'll say if something practical comes up. For now sharing this is great. Thanks for looking so closely.
Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. I'm in public service myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you. All the best
You're not alone, Jing. This could happen to any of us. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day. Thinking of Melbourne.
wishing you peace, Jing. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. Sent it to 29 people at work. All the best
hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. After 30 years in retail I know how hard it's to ask for anything. God bless.
Thinking of you. Looking forward to the next update. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Thinking of Melbourne.
