A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Medellín

We have the land, the volunteers and the plan for a free library and reading room - we need $900 for materials.

For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 14 volunteers, including the neighborhood football club, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for Acacia Primary School, but no funding. We have received donated volunteer hours worth about $210, and the remaining cost is $900. It will serve about 219 people, including young people who have nowhere safe to play. We'll hold a build day in November and everyone is invited. We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos. All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance. Where the $900 goes: • Materials: $710 • Permits and inspections: $50 • Safety equipment and signage: $50 • Tools hire and delivery: $90 Every share and every dollar helps. - Natalia

  • Wishing you peace. More neighborhoods should do this. Please keep us posted.

    • Sending love, Natalia. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. We had a similar scare last year, I know what it feels like. Love from Bakersfield

      • Thinking of you and your family, Natalia. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. My neighbor in Saint-Denis donated after I showed her your page. Greetings from Saint-Denis.

        • Thinking of you and your family, Natalia. Looking forward to the next update. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. All the best.

          • Good luck, Natalia. Shared this with my family. Put this on a community board in Yogyakarta this morning.
