A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Houston
We have the land, the volunteers and the plan for a free library and reading room - we need $3,650 for materials.
🇺🇸 United States1,721 views
For three years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 17 volunteers, including a retired civil engineer, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Freedom community hall, but no funding.
We have received donated paint, and the remaining cost is $3,650.
It will serve about 550 people, including local farmers and market traders. We'll hold a build day in July and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $3,650 goes:
• Materials: $2,800
• Permits and inspections: $230
• Safety equipment and signage: $220
• Tools hire and delivery: $400
With deep gratitude,
Rohan

hope it all works out, Rohan. Shared it with a few friends. My neighbor had a similar thing happen so this one hit home. Thinking of Houston.
is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Rohan
Sure. The biggest one is materials, $2,800. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. Fair thing to want to know.
stay strong. Looking forward to the next update. My daughter saw me on my phone and now she wants to give her pocket money. All the best.
Hang in there. Great idea, hope you get there. Love from Denver
