Fighting prostate cancer: help Alok afford treatment in San Francisco

Alok is facing prostate cancer and the cost of treatment, travel and care at home is far beyond what the family can cover.

San Francisco
Alok was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January. The oncology team at San Francisco University Hospital has planned 6 rounds of treatment, starting in May. He will be away from work for about 8 weeks. Alok is 53, worked as a cleaner at a hospital until January, and has always been the one who looks after everyone else. Now it's our turn to look after him. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, trips to San Francisco University Hospital 2 times a week, and the income the family has lost add up quickly. We've already sold what we could and have begun borrowing for groceries. Every kindness from you takes weight off his shoulders. I'll post every invoice and receipt as an update so donors can follow where each gift goes. Where the $12,800 goes: • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $8,250 • Scans and lab work: $1,450 • Transport to San Francisco University Hospital: $610 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $410 • Household costs while unable to work: $2,080 Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure. - Nikhil

Updates from Nikhil

  1. Small update. $4,206 so far, the plan for transport to San Francisco University Hospital is now scheduled.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($2,427 in total) we've started the first stage. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  3. Small update. $1,041 so far, I met with the treatment center and confirmed the amounts.

reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. I went through something like this 14 years ago and strangers helped me out.

Rooting for you. I work in healthcare and wanted you to know people are on your side. After 16 years in social work I know how hard it's to ask for anything

      • Hope this works out for you. Please keep us posted. Thinking of San Francisco.

        • Hang in there. Shared this with my family. Put this on a community board in Belo Horizonte this morning. Thinking of San Francisco
