A free library and reading room for the Cedar community hall: help our neighbors in Kingston
A community-led a free library and reading room at the Cedar community hall that will serve 567 neighbors.
🇯🇲 Jamaica821 views
For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 13 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Cedar community hall, but no funding.
We have received donated volunteer hours worth about $280, and the remaining cost is $750.
It will serve about 567 people, including children, seniors and people with disabilities. We'll hold a build day in January and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $750 goes:
• Materials: $500
• Permits and inspections: $50
• Safety equipment and signage: $130
• Tools hire and delivery: $70
I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.

Any update on how things are going in Kingston?
Great idea, hope you get there. Thinking of Kingston.
is there a list of costs somewhere? Just curious how it adds up for Andre!
Everything on the list is an amount I've been quoted or invoiced. materials comes first ($500) and I'll update the page as each thing gets paid. Fair thing to want to know.
so sorry you're going through this. More neighborhoods should do this. Take care
Best of luck, Andre. Everyone deserves a bit of help sometimes. Thinking of Kingston.
keep going, Andre. Looking forward to the next update. Take care
Thinking of you, Andre. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Wish I lived closer to San Jose so I could bring a meal. Thinking of Kingston.
You're not alone, Andre. I hope things turn around soon. Please keep us posted.
Best of luck. Gave what I could, wish it was more. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. All the best.
Sending strength, Andre. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Blessings
