Amelia was diagnosed with an aortic valve defect in March. The surgeon at San Diego University Hospital recommended emergency hernia repair, and She is scheduled for June. The hospital's financial office gave us a written estimate of $5,250, and after what my employer's plan will pay we're still $4,150 short. my mother has been in and out of San Diego University Hospital since March. The doctors say an aortic valve defect will get worse without emergency hernia repair. We have emptied our savings and borrowed from relatives, but the estimate of $5,250 is more than we can find. While we wait, Amelia struggles with daily life and can't look after the children alone. Her family has taken turns caring for her, and I've cut my own work hours to be there. Recovery is expected to take about 10 weeks. During that time Amelia won't be able to look after the children alone, so the costs keep growing. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $4,150 goes: • Post-operative medication: $270 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $300 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $2,750 • Physiotherapy sessions: $390 • Travel and lodging for the family: $440 If you're reading this, thank you. - Alice

  • So sorry you're going through this, Alice. Looking forward to the next update. Greetings from San Diego.

    • You're not alone, Alice. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. All the best.

what exactly is the $4,150 for?

        • Alice G. NelsonOwnerAnswerPhoto verified

Sure. The biggest one is post-operative medication, $270. The rest is in the list at the bottom of the post and I'll upload receipts as I pay each one. It helps to be asked.

      • Hope things get better soon. Look after yourselves too, caregivers need rest. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry.

        • sending good thoughts, Alice. It takes guts to ask. Well done. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. God bless.

          • Shared it with a few friends. Put this on a community board in Springfield this morning. Love from Springfield.

            • thinking of you. Gave what I could, wish it was more. Blessings.
