In November I was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. My oncology team at the San Diego Oncology Institute has planned 6 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in February. I was told to expect about 8 weeks away from work.
I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 44, I worked as a shop owner until November, and I have been the main earner for my household.
Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the San Diego Oncology Institute 5 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly.
My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries.
Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment.
Where the $5,450 goes:
• Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $790
• Transport to the San Diego Oncology Institute: $1,050
• Scans and lab work: $1,300
• Household costs while unable to work: $2,310
