Sakshi's colon cancer treatment fund

Sakshi is facing colon cancer and the cost of treatment, travel and care at home is far beyond what the family can cover.

In February I was diagnosed with colon cancer. My oncology team at Mumbai University Hospital has planned 8 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in May. I was told to expect about 3 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 39, I worked as a primary school teacher until February, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to Mumbai University Hospital 4 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. I'll post every invoice and receipt as an update so donors can follow where each gift goes. Where the $1,450 goes: • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $780 • Scans and lab work: $190 • Transport to Mumbai University Hospital: $70 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $100 • Household costs while unable to work: $310 You're what makes this possible, and I'll never forget it.

Praying for you, Sakshi. This could happen to any of us. Put this on a community board in Kinondoni this morning.

    • Wishing Sakshi a smooth procedure and a full recovery. Don't be hard on yourself for asking

      • Thinking of you. Gave what I could, wish it was more. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double.
