Emergency hernia repair for Esther: covering what insurance won't

A scheduled emergency hernia repair in May is out of reach without help covering $1,200 of the cost.

In January I was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes. My surgeon at Nairobi Orthopedic Institute recommended emergency hernia repair, and I have been placed on the schedule for May. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,500, and after what the government subsidy will pay, I'm still $1,200 short. Doctors at Nairobi Orthopedic Institute told me severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without emergency hernia repair. I work as a restaurant cook, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,500 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a restaurant cook have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. The recovery period is expected to take about 12 weeks. I'll not be able to stand for more than ten minutes during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $1,200 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $320 • Hospital stay (4 nights): $620 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $90 • Post-operative medication: $25 • Physiotherapy sessions: $55 • Travel and lodging for the family: $90 Thanks for being kind about this.
