Clean water and shade for Mwanza: restoring the Freedom wetland
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Freedom wetland needs $350 for saplings and equipment.
Anywhere in the world1,552 views
The Freedom wetland has been used as an informal dump for years. This April, 37 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 196 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $350 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $165
• Tools and protective gear: $75
• Waste removal and skip hire: $75
• Signage and educational materials: $35
Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure.

Stay strong, Eunice. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. My father had a similar thing happen so this one hit home. Thinking of Mwanza.
