A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Halifax
We have the land, the volunteers and the plan for a free library and reading room - we need $1,800 for materials.
🇨🇦 Canada659 views
For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 21 volunteers, including local mothers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Cedar vacant lot, but no funding.
We have received donated tools, and the remaining cost is $1,800.
It will serve about 181 people, including school children and their families. We'll hold a build day in May and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $1,800 goes:
• Materials: $860
• Permits and inspections: $200
• Safety equipment and signage: $220
• Tools hire and delivery: $520
With deep gratitude,
Doris

Sending love. Your post was clear and honest. My father had a similar thing happen so this one hit home.
