Surgery fund for Onyango: emergency hernia repair in Nairobi

A scheduled emergency hernia repair in April is out of reach without help covering $1,100 of the cost.

In January I was diagnosed with an aortic valve defect. My surgeon at Nairobi Regional Medical Center recommended emergency hernia repair, and I have been placed on the schedule for April. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,400, and after what my insurance will pay, I'm still $1,100 short. Doctors at Nairobi Regional Medical Center told me an aortic valve defect will get worse without emergency hernia repair. I work as a security guard, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,400 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a security guard have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Recovery is expected to take about 4 weeks. I'll not be able to lift anything heavy during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $1,100 goes: • Physiotherapy sessions: $110 • Hospital stay (3 nights): $400 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $510 • Post-operative medication: $40 • Travel and lodging for the family: $40 Ask me anything below before you decide. I'd rather you were sure.

Updates from Onyango

  1. Small update. $438 so far, the first invoice got paid this week.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($208 in total) I made the first payment toward surgeon and anesthesia fees. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  3. We're at 9% thanks to 6 of you. I made the first payment toward physiotherapy sessions. More news soon. - Onyango
