In May I was diagnosed with a hip fracture that never healed properly. My surgeon at Saint Luke Hospital recommended valve repair surgery, and I have been placed on the schedule for August. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $1,800, and after what the public health scheme will pay, I'm still $1,350 short. Doctors at Saint Luke Hospital told me a hip fracture that never healed properly will get worse without valve repair surgery. I work as a retail assistant, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $1,800 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a retail assistant have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. Rehabilitation is expected to take about 12 weeks. I'll not be able to work a full shift during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. I'll pay the hospital and pharmacy directly and post every receipt in the updates section. Where the $1,350 goes: • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $600 • Hospital stay (5 nights): $490 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $80 • Post-operative medication: $50 • Physiotherapy sessions: $130 If you're reading this, thank you. - Omondi

  • stay strong, Omondi. Hope this works out for you. I told my book club about it and three of them are giving too. Thinking of Embakasi.

I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. Greetings from Cebu City.

      • good luck. This could happen to any of us. This is the second need I've supported on here and the first that made me cry. Take care.

        • Praying for you. Look after yourselves too, caregivers need rest. My late mom used to say help given quietly counts double. Love from Ikeja.

          • stay strong, Omondi. Hope this works out for you. Take care
