Restoring the Lotus canal: a volunteer-led project in Xalapa
Volunteers are restoring the Lotus canal in Xalapa; $250 covers saplings, tools and waste removal.
🇲🇽 Mexico971 views
The Lotus canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This December, 72 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 103 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $250 goes:
• Waste removal and skip hire: $100
• Tools and protective gear: $115
• Signage and educational materials: $35

You're not alone. Shared this with my family. Don't be hard on yourself for asking. Take care.
stay strong, Daniela. Hope this works out for you. Wish I lived closer to Nagpur so I could bring a meal.
Take care, Daniela. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Read this on the bus and kept thinking about it all day. Love from Cape Town.
