Restoring the Lotus canal: a volunteer-led project in Luxor
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Lotus canal needs $400 for saplings and equipment.
🇪🇬 Egypt1,467 views
The Lotus canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This February, 94 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 145 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the district council, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $400 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $230
• Tools and protective gear: $70
• Waste removal and skip hire: $80
• Signage and educational materials: $20
Thanks for reading all this.

Stay strong, Ibrahim. This could happen to any of us. I went through something like this 11 years ago and strangers helped me out
Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. My sister had a similar thing happen so this one hit home!
