Restoring the Acacia canal: a volunteer-led project in Birmingham
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Acacia canal needs $2,400 for saplings and equipment.
Anywhere in the world1,967 views
The Acacia canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This February, 107 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 64 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the district council, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $2,400 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $1,300
• Tools and protective gear: $500
• Waste removal and skip hire: $450
• Signage and educational materials: $150
I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.

Hope it all works out, Adalynn. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did.
Hang in there. Great idea, hope you get there. After 28 years in social work I know how hard it's to ask for anything
wishing you the best, Adalynn. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Put this on a community board in Gondar this morning. Blessings
