In June I was diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer. My oncology team at the Birmingham Oncology Institute has planned 4 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in September. I was told to expect about 3 weeks away from work. I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 55, I worked as a bank teller until June, and I have been the main earner for my household. Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the Birmingham Oncology Institute 2 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly. My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries. Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment. Where the $7,500 goes: • Household costs while unable to work: $1,050 • Nutrition and supplements prescribed by the care team: $530 • Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $5,000 • Transport to the Birmingham Oncology Institute: $920 I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.
