Heliopolis
The Lotus canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This February, 33 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 131 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good. We have a plan agreed with the municipal water board, including native species selected by a local botanist. The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade. All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials. We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted. Where the $250 goes: • Signage and educational materials: $15 • Tools and protective gear: $85 • Native saplings and stakes: $150 If you're reading this, thank you. - Jamal

Updates from Jamal

  1. Small update. $39 so far, the first invoice got paid this week.

  2. Good news. Because of your gifts ($18 in total) I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  • Hope it all works out. It takes guts to ask. Well done. Put this on a community board in Reading this morning.
