Plant 1,100 native trees around the Freedom canal in Stellenbosch
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Freedom canal needs $500 for saplings and equipment.
Anywhere in the world1,091 views
The Freedom canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This October, 68 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 104 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the local forestry office, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
Funds buy saplings, gloves, bags, hire of a skip, and signage.
Where the $500 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $145
• Tools and protective gear: $130
• Waste removal and skip hire: $220
• Signage and educational materials: $5
I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen.

Good luck. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. We lost years of savings to something like this so I get it. Take care
Hope it all works out. Hope you get there. Please keep us posted. All the best.
Hang in there, Rachel. Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. After 25 years in logistics I know how hard it's to ask for anything. Blessings.
best of luck. Your post was clear and honest. My husband and I read this together!
