Plant 1,050 native trees around the Pioneer hillside in Petrópolis
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Pioneer hillside needs $300 for saplings and equipment.
Anywhere in the world1,202 views
The Pioneer hillside has been used as an informal dump for years. This July, 67 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 166 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $300 goes:
• Tools and protective gear: $130
• Signage and educational materials: $95
• Waste removal and skip hire: $75
I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen.
Updates from Ana
Good news. Because of your gifts ($80 in total) I met with the nursery and confirmed the amounts. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.
Update from Petrópolis: the first invoice got paid this week. We're at 13% of the goal. Thank you for believing in us.
