Justice shouldn't depend on a bank balance: Panagiotis's family reunification petition

A family reunification petition deadline is approaching and Panagiotis cannot afford the lawyer.

I'm facing a family reunification petition. My hearing is scheduled for January, and the filing fees and the lawyer's retainer come to $350. I have been told by three legal-aid offices that their waiting list is longer than my deadline. I have all of my paperwork ready, and my caseworker at Athens Welcome Centre has confirmed that my case is valid. If I miss the deadline I could lose my right to stay with my family and my job. My children were born here and this is the only home they know. I'll share any non-sensitive updates as the case moves along. Funds cover only the filing fees, translations and attorney retainer. Where the $350 goes: • Court-appointed interpreter and travel: $45 • Certified translations and document copies: $105 • Filing and biometrics fees: $200 Thank you so much.

Updates from Panagiotis

  1. Good news. Because of your gifts ($166 in total) the plan for certified translations and document copies is now scheduled. Still a way to go but it feels less lonely.

  2. Quick update: $136 raised so far (39%). I made the first payment toward certified translations and document copies. Receipts coming as soon as I have them.

  • Thanks for sharing this, Panagiotis. I hope things turn around soon. I'm in public service myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you.

    • Thanks for sharing this, Panagiotis. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected. All the best.
