In February I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. My oncology team at Dar es Salaam Cancer Centre has planned 12 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in June. I was told to expect about 12 weeks away from work.
I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 52, I worked as a construction supervisor until February, and I have been the main earner for my household.
Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to Dar es Salaam Cancer Centre 4 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly.
My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries.
Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment.
Where the $1,600 goes:
• Household costs while unable to work: $260
• Transport to Dar es Salaam Cancer Centre: $115
• Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $970
• Scans and lab work: $255
