In August I was diagnosed with kidney cancer. My oncology team at the Fresno Oncology Institute has planned 10 rounds of treatment, and the first starts in November. I was told to expect about 12 weeks away from work.
I never imagined I'd be writing something like this. I'm 53, I worked as a shop owner until August, and I have been the main earner for my household.
Treatment is covered only in part. Medication that isn't on the approved list, transport to the Fresno Oncology Institute 4 times a week, and the income I have lost add up quickly.
My family is doing everything they can, but we've already sold what we could and are borrowing for groceries.
Funds will be used only for treatment, medication, transport to appointments and essential living costs during treatment.
Where the $7,600 goes:
• Chemotherapy and medication not covered: $6,000
• Household costs while unable to work: $730
• Transport to the Fresno Oncology Institute: $870
