Emergency hernia repair for Courtney: covering what insurance won't

A scheduled emergency hernia repair in April is out of reach without help covering $4,100 of the cost.

In January I was diagnosed with severe cataracts in both eyes. My surgeon at San Antonio Regional Medical Center recommended emergency hernia repair, and I have been placed on the schedule for April. The hospital's financial office gave me a written estimate of $5,750, and after what my insurance will pay, I'm still $4,100 short. Doctors at San Antonio Regional Medical Center told me severe cataracts in both eyes will get worse without emergency hernia repair. I work as a hotel cleaner, and I have saved what I can, but the estimate of $5,750 is far beyond what I've. Until the surgery I can't work full days, and my hours as a hotel cleaner have already been cut. Every week of waiting means more pain and a bigger risk. The recovery period is expected to take about 7 weeks. I'll not be able to walk without help during that time, so this has become a financial emergency as well as a medical one. The money goes straight to the treatment bills, and I'll share the invoices as they're paid so you can see exactly what your gift did. Where the $4,100 goes: • Post-operative medication: $250 • Physiotherapy sessions: $340 • Pre-operative tests and imaging: $370 • Surgeon and anesthesia fees: $3,000 • Travel and lodging for the family: $140 I'll keep this page updated with receipts as things happen. - Courtney
