Clean water and shade for East London: restoring the Jacaranda canal
A neighborhood-led restoration of the Jacaranda canal needs $350 for saplings and equipment.
🇿🇦 South Africa1,918 views
The Jacaranda canal has been used as an informal dump for years. This May, 100 neighbors turned up for a first cleanup, filling 134 bags in a single morning. Now we want to restore it for good.
We have a plan agreed with the city parks department, including native species selected by a local botanist.
The area floods more each year, and fish have returned for the first time in a decade after our first cleanup. Restoring it will protect homes and bring back shade.
All the labor is volunteered. We just need materials.
We'll post planting day photos and a count of every sapling planted.
Where the $350 goes:
• Native saplings and stakes: $140
• Tools and protective gear: $85
• Waste removal and skip hire: $75
• Signage and educational materials: $50
With deep gratitude,
Sibusiso

good luck, Sibusiso. Hope you get there.
can I help in a way that isn't money? I'm near East London
Gave what I could, wish it was more. Thinking of East London.
You're not alone, Sibusiso. This could happen to any of us. We're a small family in San Nicolás de los Garza but we're thinking of you. Take care.
Thinking of you and your family, Sibusiso. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. Blessings.
Sending love, Sibusiso. Reading this made my day a bit heavier but I'm glad I did. Don't lose heart. A few weeks ago I was in a hole too and it changed faster than I expected.

Hope the build day goes well, wish I lived closer. After 6 years in retail I know how hard it's to ask for anything.
