A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Mexicali
A community-led a free library and reading room at the Baobab health centre yard that will serve 379 neighbors.

For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 29 volunteers, including a retired civil engineer, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Baobab health centre yard, but no funding.
We have received donated soil and plants, and the remaining cost is $300.
It will serve about 379 people, including children, seniors and people with disabilities. We'll hold a build day in July and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $300 goes:
• Tools hire and delivery: $150
• Safety equipment and signage: $35
• Permits and inspections: $115
With deep gratitude,
Amparo

Wishing you the best, Amparo. Hope you get there. Don't give up. God bless
Take care, Amparo. This could happen to any of us. We're a small family in Jakarta but we're thinking of you.
Hope it all works out. It takes guts to ask. Well done. Put this on a community board in Nairobi this morning. All the best
Thanks for sharing this, Amparo. Shared this with my family. I'm in hospitality myself and wanted you to know we're cheering for you. Greetings from Riverside.
You're not alone. I've been in a tough spot myself and it does get easier. We're a small family in Dhaka but we're thinking of you.
