A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Lowell
Volunteers in Lowell are raising $1,800 for a free library and reading room at the Acacia health centre yard.

For five years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 12 volunteers, including the neighborhood football club, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Acacia health centre yard, but no funding.
We have received donated tools, and the remaining cost is $1,800.
It will serve about 573 people, including elderly neighbors living alone. We'll hold a build day in December and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $1,800 goes:
• Safety equipment and signage: $300
• Materials: $1,100
• Tools hire and delivery: $400
