A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Katowice
A community-led a free library and reading room at Union Park that will serve 317 neighbors.

For eight years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 18 volunteers, including two retired carpenters, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for Union Park, but no funding.
We have received donated volunteer hours worth about $480, and the remaining cost is $1,450.
It will serve about 317 people, including school children and their families. We'll hold a build day in October and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
All purchases will be made by two volunteers and logged publicly. Surplus funds will go to maintenance.
Where the $1,450 goes:
• Permits and inspections: $155
• Materials: $1,200
• Safety equipment and signage: $95
I hope life is good to you.

Wishing you peace. Projects like this are what make a place worth living in. My neighbor in Rotterdam donated after I showed her your page. All the best.
It takes guts to ask. Well done. Thinking of Katowice.
