A free library and reading room: a volunteer-led effort in Aberdeen
We have the land, the volunteers and the plan for a free library and reading room - we need $2,900 for materials.
🇬🇧 Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom489 views
For five years the neighborhood has asked for a free library and reading room. This year a group of 27 volunteers, including a group of teenagers, decided to stop waiting. The council has given permission for the Cedar vacant lot, but no funding.
We have received donated volunteer hours worth about $1,150, and the remaining cost is $2,900.
It will serve about 387 people, including young people who have nowhere safe to play. We'll hold a build day in November and everyone is invited.
We're a small team, and every dollar will be spent in the open - I'll post receipts and progress photos.
Funds are spent only on materials, permits and safety equipment; all labor is volunteered.
Where the $2,900 goes:
• Materials: $1,900
• Permits and inspections: $240
• Safety equipment and signage: $400
• Tools hire and delivery: $360
I'll pay this kindness forward the moment I'm able to.
